The six MW Porkeri Wind Farm is situated in Suðuroy, the southernmost island of the archipelago, which has an isolated grid currently powered by hydro and thermal energy as well as solar power to a limited extent.
In late 2021, battery storage matching the capacity of the wind farm and a synchronous compensator was added.
With the battery and a synchronous compensator 100% of demand is met with wind energy when conditions are adequate. In 2024, the Suðuroy grid ran on 100% renewables for 110 days in total. More than half of those days, on 100% wind power supported by batteries and a synchronous condenser.
